If you were around back then, you remember: losing everything to a silly death was part of learning the ropes in Gielinor, and stories of falling in the Wilderness with your full gear became the stuff of long chats in arcades and LAN cafés. Now Jagex is taking that tension to the extreme. Since November 4, Old School RuneScape has Hardcore Worlds, a permanent game mode in which every character gets only one life. No respawns. No second chances.
How Hardcore Worlds work
Hardcore worlds are separate from the main game and have their own economy, but they keep everything else: players can trade, use the Grand Exchange and level up with the same XP gain and drop rates as the regular game. All the new content coming to Old School RuneScape also reaches these worlds. There is only one difference, and it changes everything: when you die, it is over.
When a character falls, the Reaper (the NPC Death, an old friend of the community) offers a choice. The first option is to reset all progress and start over in Hardcore. The second is to be banished from Hardcore Worlds and sent to the main game, keeping progress and gear but losing every item that does not fall into the “Items kept on Death” category, the items the game already protects when you die.
Kieren Charles, Creative Director for Old School RuneScape at Jagex, summed up the mode: “The Reaper has been waiting a long time for this, and in a game mode where death is forever, every decision counts!” He also had some advice: “Try not to die.”
A raffle with real-life prizes
Alongside the launch, Jagex is running the Reaper’s Raffle and World First rewards from November 4. By completing tasks set by Death himself, players earn entries into a draw for physical prizes: skilling pins, skateboard decks, a Starforge PC bundle, a God Wars replica collection and an exclusive Death NPC trophy.
Where to play
Old School RuneScape is free to start, with an optional membership, and is available on PC (official client and Steam), iOS and Android, with cross-platform progression between PC and mobile. The “Old School” version launched in 2013 from a 2007 backup of RuneScape, and the series reaches its 25th year in 2026; according to Jagex, the franchise has welcomed over 300 million player accounts. MMO fans with an eye on the next big update can also check the release date of Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold and Chrono Odyssey’s new boss fight.
