Some detectives last longer than plenty of alchemists out there. The Butt Detective (Oshiri Tantei) anime, starring the detective whose face looks like a bottom and a big hit with kids in Japan, will air new episodes starting in April 2027. The official website announced it on Wednesday (November 4), a date picked on purpose: in Japan, November 4, or “11/04,” can be read as “ii oshiri,” roughly “nice butt,” and it is also the character’s birthday.

The villains in the teaser visual

The teaser visual released with the announcement shows the detective and his assistant, the dog Brown, taking notes with worried faces. Behind them float suspect files with the Alphabet Phantom Thieves B, Z and N, a trio that has already put the detective in tough spots in difficult cases, and the ruin-raiding pair Arachin and Misty, who once faced Oshiri Dandy, the hero’s father, when he was young. The site promises a tenser mood than usual, without saying yet which cases are coming.

A series that keeps going

The new episodes continue a long-running streak. The current batch premiered on October 3 and is still airing. The story started in 2011 as an iPad app, became children’s books from publisher Poplar in 2012, created by the duo credited as Troll, and passed 30 million copies in circulation in 2024. Toei Animation‘s anime premiered on NHK Educational in May 2018 with three episodes and became a weekly series that December. In recent years it has added new batches every spring and fall. The third film, Butt Detective the Movie: Star and Moon, opened in Japanese theaters in March 2025. NHK is also preparing the Hirayasumi anime for January 2027, and Toei has another big release in May: the Girls Band Cry film.

His catchphrase “Fumu, nioimasu ne” (“Hmm, something smells fishy”) and his finishing move, which wraps up every case in a very smelly way, explain why Japanese kids keep coming back. For those of us who grew up with cartoons that ran for years, it is nice to see a kids’ series approach ten years on air without running out of steam. Toei has not yet announced the episode count or time slot for the new batch.
