Look at Nina’s face in the teaser: the crooked mouth, the flushed cheeks, the look of someone ready to pick a fight with the world again. Girls Band Cry is getting a brand-new film, Girls Band Cry The Movie, and Toei will open it in Japanese theaters on May 21, 2027. The teaser video and key visual debuted on Tuesday, November 3, on the official website.
The band hits the road
The video teases that the band TOGENASHI TOGEARI goes on a national tour across Japan in the film’s story. In the new key visual, all five members stand together, each in her own T-shirt and pose, a portrait that says a lot about who they are before anyone says a word.
The cast and staff are returning. Kazuo Sakai directs, Jukki Hanada writes the screenplay, nari Teshima handles character design, and Yūsuke Tanaka composes the music, with Kenji Tamai (agehasprings) as music producer. The CG directors are Jae Hoon Jung and Daiki Nakazawa: the series is fully 3DCG with a hand-drawn finish, and much of its charm lives in the characters’ small expressions and gestures. All five members of the real band, who voice the characters, are credited on the film.
March brings a live show and a stage play too
Before the movie, the real TOGENASHI TOGEARI plays a concert at K-Arena Yokohama on March 20, and the anime gets a stage play from March 21 to 28 at the Sunshine Theatre in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.
The TV series premiered in April 2024 with 13 episodes and follows Nina, who drops out of high school, moves to Tokyo alone and finds a place to belong through music. Crunchyroll has streamed the anime since November 2024. In 2025 the TV story was turned into two compilation films, released in October and November. The new movie is the first original story for theaters.
And 2027 is shaping up nicely for band anime fans: Bocchi the Rock! also got a prequel film.
