Every great journey comes to an end, and I know a thing or two about chasing something for too long. Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign (Owari no Seraph), the manga by Takaya Kagami (story), Yamato Yamamoto (art) and Daisuke Furuya (storyboards), ends in the next issue of Shueisha’s Jump SQ. magazine, out in Japan on December 4. The announcement ran in the magazine’s December issue, released on Wednesday, November 4.
37 volumes to close the books
The series had already revealed it would end with its 37th compiled volume. Shueisha shipped volume 36 on May 1. In North America, Viz Media publishes the manga digitally and in print and will release volume 35 on November 10; Viz and MANGA Plus publish new chapters simultaneously with Japan, so the final chapter should arrive in English on the same day.
What it is about
Seraph of the End launched in Jump SQ. in 2012. The story is set in a world where an unknown virus has killed the entire human population except for children, who were then enslaved by vampires. It follows Yuichiro Hyakuya, a boy who dreams of becoming strong enough to wipe out every vampire, while his adoptive brother Mikaela ends up turned into a vampire.
The manga became an anime in 2015, produced by Wit Studio, with two 12-episode seasons: the first in April and Battle in Nagoya in October. Funimation, now part of Crunchyroll, streamed both as they aired. The franchise also includes Kagami’s prequel novels about Guren Ichinose, with a manga adaptation drawn by Yo Asami, plus a stage musical.
For readers who have followed the series since the early fan translations, this is the end of a 14-year road, and it is not the only farewell this season: the Bleach anime also wrapped up after 22 years.
