Three days before the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake arrives on Switch 2, Google has joined the party with a great easter egg. Just search for “zelda” or “Ocarina of Time” and a glowing Master Sword appears, floating in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Pull the sword, travel back in time
Click the sword and it gets pushed into its pedestal, with a sound effect and the screen warping like the trip through the Temple of Time. On the other side is Google from 1998, the year Ocarina of Time launched on the Nintendo 64: the old logo with the exclamation mark, the Times New Roman-style font and results shown as a simple list of blue links, one under the other.
No AI overviews, no shopping links and no ads. Unsurprisingly, some outlets joked that the easter egg is now the most fun way to switch off AI overviews in search, at least for a few clicks.
The remake arrives Thursday
The new Ocarina of Time launches this Thursday, November 5, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, with rebuilt visuals, free camera control and other changes from the 1998 original. It is the same day the Switch 2 Zelda 40th anniversary edition, which sold out in the US, gets restocked.
For those who played it back then, the easter egg is a reminder that 28 years have gone by. For anyone about to discover Hyrule for the first time, it is a nice glimpse of what the internet looked like when Link first played the ocarina.
