As a family man, I should say I don’t remember Senren*Banka that fondly. That would be a lie: I remember every route. And Thursday’s (November 5) news is good for anyone who remembers too: the Senren*Banka anime will be a TV series, slated for 2027. The information came with the opening of the anime’s official X account, which also celebrated another milestone: the Yuzusoft visual novel has passed 1 million copies sold worldwide. To mark it, Kobuichi, the original character designer, drew a new illustration of Yoshino, the one at the top of this post.
Cast and opening
The game’s voice actresses return to their roles: Sora Haruka (Sendai Eri) as Tomotake Yoshino, Kotorii Yūki (Takamori Natsumi) as Hitachi Mako, Satō Mikan (Yamamoto Nozomi) as Murasame and Sawasawa Sawa (Tanezaki Atsumi) as Lena Liechtenauer. The opening theme goes to KOTOKO, the same singer who performed the game’s theme. Studio, director and episode count have not been announced yet.
The game
Senren*Banka came out in Japan in July 2016 as Yuzusoft’s 10th anniversary title and won awards for its art, music and characters in its release year: runner-up at the 2016 Moe Game Awards and first overall in Getchu’s Bishoujo Game Awards. The story takes the protagonist to Hoori, a small hot-spring town, where he pulls the sacred sword from the local shrine and ends up engaged to Yoshino, heiress of the family that guards the blade, with Murasame, the sword’s spirit, thrown in. You can imagine the rest, and the rest is exactly what we play these for.
The original release is an adult game; the Steam edition is all-ages, with English, Chinese and Japanese text and Japanese voices. Sekai Project announced an English version in 2017, but it was Nekonyan that released it, in February 2020. The Switch version followed in May 2022. On Steam the game costs US$ 34.99 (price checked on November 5, no discount).
Yuzusoft visual novel adaptations are nothing new: Riddle Joker, Café Stella and Tenshi Sōkō also got anime. It is a wave much like the manga and light novels that keep becoming series, such as the Otaku Vampire’s Love Bite anime and the second part of Romelia War Chronicle. The rest of the news is on our anime page.
