Premise
The synopsis opens with a line that sets the tone: “My mom became a crater.” In the world of Death Stranding, the souls of the dead are stranded between the two sides and, when they touch a living person, they cause explosions capable of wiping out cities. The protagonist is a girl left alone after one of those explosions. She rejects any connection with the world and chooses to live in isolation, until an unexpected encounter drags her toward an unknown place.
The series is a new story with original characters, but set in the same era as the game: North America right after Sam reconnects the continent through the Chiral Network. As the former United States tries to become one country again, those very connections begin to bring new disasters. Away from Sam and Bridges, four figures each react in their own way: an elderly sage who wants to restore the world’s connections through an unknown method, a female soldier consumed by destruction and war, a boy burning with anger at the world’s injustices, and the girl who severed all ties. Hers is the story the teaser shows: nightmares about the Beached Things (BTs), a motorcycle, a crater on the horizon.
Production
Directed by Sano Takayuki, with hand-drawn 2D animation by studio E&H production (Ninja Kamui, Bullet/Bullet, the Magic Knight Rayearth TV series). Kojima Hideo is executive producer and the original character design is by Ilya Kuvshinov, character designer of Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Fuller credits: pending.
Background: the project was announced in November 2025 at the Disney+ Originals Preview in Hong Kong as Kojima Productions’ first partnership with a global streaming platform, then still under a “working title”. Around the same time the studio announced a separate animated film, Death Stranding: Mosquito, directed by Miyamoto Hiroshi and written by Aaron Guzikowski, on top of the live-action film with A24, directed by Michael Sarnoski. The original 2019 game has passed 20 million players according to Kojima Productions; in 2021 the mark was 5 million copies. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach arrived on PS5 on June 26, 2025.
Assessment: game adaptations for streaming remain on the rise, as with the live-action PUBG series on Netflix and the live-action Naruto movie. The difference here is the creative control held by the creator’s own studio. The teaser is on Kojima Productions’ YouTube. End of report; updates will be issued when a date and cast exist.
