The love story between an exorcist and a painter is reaching its last chapter. The jacket band on volume 16 of Make the Exorcist Fall in Love (Exorcist o Otosenai), the manga written by Aruma Arima and drawn by Masuku Fukayama, announced the start of the final arc. The volume hit stores in Japan on Wednesday (November 4), according to Shueisha’s Jump SQ. magazine.
The story
Shueisha’s MANGA Plus service, which publishes the series in English, sums it up like this: a boy was chosen by God to become the world’s strongest exorcist and face deadly demons in battle. Carrying the fate of humanity, all he really wants is to quietly bake sweets, until one day a certain girl enters his life. That girl is Aizuki Imuri, an 18-year-old painter the demons are after, and protecting her brings him something he had never felt before: love and hope in the middle of a bloody holy war.
The series is split into arcs named after the seven deadly sins, each tied to a demon king: Mammon for greed, Leviathan for envy, Beelzebub for gluttony, Asmodeus for lust, and then sloth, pride and wrath. It is a manga that moves between sweet, shy-couple chapters and heavy battles with heartbreaking twists, and Fukayama’s art follows each change of mood with a lot of care in the faces and expressions, from a calm smile to despair.
Where to read it
Arima and Fukayama launched the manga on Shonen Jump+, Shueisha’s digital platform, in December 2021. In 2022 it got an official promotional video voiced by Sōma Saitō and Rie Takahashi. MANGA Plus is also home to other recent Shonen Jump+ series, such as Norihiro Yagi’s new Bartlet Fairy Basslet. There is no date yet for the final chapter. It is not the only farewell on Shueisha’s horizon: Seraph of the End ends on December 4.
