Behold, dear readers: the thief who taught the world to walk in the shadows is coming back, rebuilt piece by piece. Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal and Atari announced that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches on December 3 on PC and consoles, with a bonus nobody saw coming: an all-new campaign, The Tarnished Mirror, included at launch.

Platforms and price

The remaster is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (with Xbox Play Anywhere), Nintendo Switch 2 and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG), plus PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch owners can upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for free. The Standard Digital Edition costs $29.99, and a $34.99 Deluxe Digital Edition adds an art book, the official soundtrack and an excerpt from an upcoming novelization of Thief: The Dark Project.

For collectors, physical pre-orders for PS5 and Switch 2 are already open on Atari’s store: Standard ($29.99), Steelbook with a printed manual ($39.99) and the Deluxe Trapezoid Edition ($69.99), which recreates the trapezoid-shaped “big-box” packaging of the original 1998 release, with a Steelbook, manual and a Remaster Diary. Every physical Switch 2 version also plays on the original Switch.

What changes under the hood

The numbers, my friends, are deliciously nostalgic: the package runs on KEX Engine, Nightdive’s restoration engine, and includes the original 1998 Thief, the extra missions, content and updates from the 1999 Thief Gold re-release, and it supports player-created mods, including The Black Parade.

And here is the boldest experiment in the lab: The Tarnished Mirror was made by the creators of The Black Parade, one of the most ambitious fan-made expansions in PC gaming history, and it now becomes official canon. The campaign bridges Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age: a seemingly simple theft spirals into imprisonment, uneasy alliances and a descent into a drowned, R’lyeh-like necropolis, with new factions, a bigger enemy roster and Lovecraftian horror. The world is not ready for this… and I love it.

Hardware, PC and performance

Doutor Overclock claims a PhD in thermal dissipation; the diploma, curiously, has never left the lab. He covers hardware, PC requirements, performance patches and upscalers, and turns spec sheets into plain English. He apologizes in advance for the dry joke in the third paragraph.
