Heads up, there is a new Brazilian game on Steam: Mayday: The Survival Island, from Pequi Studios in Goiânia, Brazil, launched on Monday on PC. The studio is just three people, and indie.io is publishing it.

Price

The game is out on Steam for $13.99, with a limited-time 20% launch discount. It has Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, full controller support and ten languages, including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese and Simplified Chinese.

Crash-landed, time to survive

It all starts with a crash: you wash up on a hand-drawn archipelago with nothing but what the sea brings ashore and 24 islands to explore. The first week is the usual survival scramble: hunt, fish, gather and get a roof over your head. Then the game opens up: crops in the ground, pens with sheep to raise and herd, buffalo you can lead back from across the island, cooking, crafting stations that unlock tools and recipes in sequence, and even potions brewed from plants you forage. Combat is there too, for anyone brave enough to dig into the island’s mysteries.

The twist is the Comfort system. In most survival games, building stops mattering once the shelter is done. Here, every wall, door, table, chair, rug or vase raises your Comfort level, and that pays out in real bonuses: more health, or energy that drains more slowly. Decorating is part of the strategy.

All 24 islands were drawn by hand rather than generated, and each holds different resources: misty swamps, bleached beaches, old cemeteries and forgotten ruins. Nothing is gated behind objectives, so you can head straight out exploring or build up your homestead first. Repeating carved symbols, magical totems and sealed-off ruins raise the question of who was there first.

Made in Goiânia

Pequi ran playtests with students in game development classes at a local school in Goiânia, so future developers could see a commercial game being built and tested firsthand. The art also hides nods to the pop culture the team grew up on, and a few characters are even modeled on the developers themselves.
