Behold, my dears: even a 2017 console still has secrets. Nintendo has published a security advisory for the original Switch, tracked as CVE-2026-82079 and rated high severity (7.0). The fix already exists: system version 23.0.0. If your Switch is on an older version, update it.

In practice, the problem sits in the local wireless mode, the one used to play with friends nearby. According to the official record, the console does not properly check the size of some incoming data, and someone within wireless range can send crafted traffic to run unauthorized code. It is not an internet attack: the attacker has to be close, and the described scenario requires an action from the user.

To check your version, go to System Settings, then System, and look at the top; the “System Update” option is on the same screen. According to the record, the flaw does not affect Switch 2: it lists only the Nintendo Switch. The numbers, my dears, are small; the message is big: keep your console updated.
