Time to bundle up on Arrakis! Funcom announced Blood and Ice on Thursday, October 29, a free expansion for Dune: Awakening arriving on December 1 for PC, PS5 and Xbox. It takes players somewhere nobody expects to see in this series: the frozen north of the desert planet.

The new map is called the Polar Sink and has two new biomes, the tundra and the ice cap, with about 35 hours of progression. The journey starts in the tundra, where wealthy water-hauling families defend luxurious strongholds, and continues to a heavily guarded ice cap, where securing access to ice becomes the main goal. There, heat is an ally: gear built for the desert must be upgraded to handle the cold, and resources found only in the Polar Sink are used to craft what you need to survive. The action stays on the ground, with traversal, temperature management and combat at the core of progression.

Funcom also showed what is coming over the next three to four months, between November 2026 and January 2027: an offline single-player mode, character transfers and full cross-play across platforms, long-standing community requests, plus new events and a cosmetic item shop.

According to the studio, more than one million new players have joined Dune: Awakening since it came to consoles. The open-world survival game is inspired by Frank Herbert’s Dune and the Legendary films directed by Denis Villeneuve.
