First stop in our series of games you can play right in your browser, picked from Ported2Browser: the multiplayer of Conker’s Bad Fur Day, remade by fans and playable at conker.wtf, with nothing to install and no cartridge needed.

The original game

Released by Rare in 2001, late in the Nintendo 64’s life, Conker’s Bad Fur Day swapped the cute squirrel look for crude humor, swearing and movie parodies. Besides the campaign, the cartridge had a competitive multiplayer for up to four players in split screen, with modes that became legendary among friends, such as the war between the Squirrels and the Tediz.

What the remake does

The project, by a developer who goes by Luax, rebuilds that multiplayer in Rust, with a WebAssembly client and a server that runs the matches. Split screen becomes online play, and empty slots are filled by the original game’s bots, at its five skill levels, from Inbred to Einstein. There are eight modes, including Deathmatch, Total War, Colors, Beach, Heist, Tank, Raptor and Race, across eight maps. The original’s cheat codes unlock extra characters.

The interesting part is how the author checks accuracy: a recompiled copy of the original game runs as a reference, and the remake is compared against it frame by frame. According to the project, movement, the camera, collisions and even the random number generator match the original exactly on the recorded traces. The controls gained mouse aiming and an over-the-shoulder camera, and gamepads work too.

How to play and what to know

Just open the site, join a server from the list or create your own, picking the map, mode and bots. It works with keyboard and mouse or a gamepad, but not touchscreens, and it connects over WebTransport, with WebSocket as a fallback. The project is still a work in progress.

Worth saying: this is a non-profit fan project with no ties to Rare, Microsoft or Nintendo. The repository holds no game data, but the models, textures and sounds come from the original game, extracted by the author, who says everything will come down if Rare or Microsoft ask. If you want the full game officially, Conker’s Bad Fur Day is part of the Rare Replay collection on Xbox One, which also runs on Xbox Series X|S.
