You have probably seen the meme: “Brazilians can double jump.” The joke came out of the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance fandom and has been going around forums and social media since at least 2022, and the best part is that games back it up: Brazilians double jump, wall-ride, blow things up and fight with capoeira in some of the biggest games in the world. Here is a fun list of where Brazil shows up in video games.

Jetstream Sam (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance)

The one to blame for the meme. Samuel Rodrigues, aka Jetstream Sam, was born and raised in Brazil, descended from a line of Japanese swordsmen, and he is one of PlatinumGames’ most stylish bosses. Cyborg, mercenary, samurai and Brazilian: if anyone can double jump, it is him.

Lúcio (Overwatch)

A DJ from Rio who skates along walls and heals his team to the beat. Not exactly a double jump, but wall-riding comes close, and he turns any match into a party.

Raze (Valorant)

Riot Games’ agent from Salvador, Bahia, solves everything with explosives: grenades, rockets and a little robot that chases enemies down. And yes, her blast pack gives her that extra boost in mid-air.

Caveira and Capitão (Rainbow Six Siege)

Ubisoft’s Brazilian operators come from BOPE, Rio’s special police unit. Caveira is famous for her silent interrogations, and Capitão brings a tactical crossbow. A feared duo on any server, especially ours.

Blanka, Laura and Sean (Street Fighter)

Blanka is the most famous Brazilian in fighting games: raised in the Amazon rainforest, he shoots electricity and rolls across the screen like a ball. In the Matsuda family, Sean brought Brazilian jiu-jitsu to Street Fighter III, and his sister Laura debuted in Street Fighter V with the same style and plenty of electricity.

Eddy Gordo and Christie Monteiro (Tekken)

Capoeira became a Tekken trademark with Eddy Gordo, who learned it in prison from Christie’s grandfather and promised to teach it to her. Christie debuted in Tekken 4 and became a capoeira prodigy in two years. Eddy’s moves were motion-captured with a real capoeira master.

Bob Wilson (Fatal Fury)

More capoeira: Bob Wilson debuted in Fatal Fury 3 as a Brazilian fighter from a family of famous capoeiristas and became a memorable presence in SNK’s series.

Neymar Jr. (Fortnite)

The football star got an Icon Series skin in Fortnite in 2021, with his own challenges. No double jump, but keepy-uppies in the middle of the island still count.

Brazil as a setting

Beyond the characters, the country itself became a level: Max Payne 3 takes its antihero to São Paulo, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has missions in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. Proof that studios like sending their heroes our way.
