Numbers first: Reign of the Black Empire, the new Hearthstone expansion, is live with 135 collectible cards, a new keyword called Assemble and a brand-new campaign in the Hearthstone Journal. Blizzard published the details in the 37.0 patch notes and also refreshed the Rewards Track for the expansion.

The Old Gods in charge

The expansion puts C’Thun, N’Zoth, Yogg-Saron and Y’Shaarj at the height of their power, and players can command one of them. Each Old God has four unique abilities that can turn a match around. The rule that matters for deckbuilding: only one Old God fits in a deck. In practice, that means choosing which one defines your strategy rather than stacking them all.

Assemble and the Titan-forged

The Assemble keyword changes how minions are made. Instead of a ready-made minion, you combine parts from a curated pool into custom creations, looking for combinations that fit each match. Translated from the jargon: it is a small crafting system inside the match itself.

On the other side are the Titan-forged, constructs and ancient defenders created by the Titans to fight the Black Empire. These cards bring tools to battle the Old Gods and their armies.

A new Journal campaign

The big change outside matches is a new campaign (called Jornada in the Brazilian version), available in the Hearthstone Journal. It brings together story, Journey Quests, rewards and events in a single campaign that unfolds over the course of the expansion, instead of loose quests.

Hearthstone is free to play on PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
