Fate/Samurai Remnant review

Review of Fate/Samurai Remnant on PC: Koei Tecmo and Type-Moon's action RPG with Musou/Warriors DNA, set in the Fate universe.

Fate/Samurai Remnant

Reviewed on: PC

Fate/Samurai Remnant is a game with Musou/Warriors pedigree set in the Fate universe.

Koei Tecmo, in partnership with Type-Moon, released Fate/Samurai Remnant, an action RPG that turned out very different from your run-of-the-mill “Musous”.

I’ll put a Pros and Cons list right at the start, and then there is a more regular text explaining a few things.

Pros:

  • Action RPG, with a simple item and equipment system, and Musou-style combat.
  • Character graphics in cel shading imitating manga and anime art worked very well.
  • FATE story, full of twists, betrayals, Masters and Servants, set in Japan during the Samurai era.
  • Several new mechanics keep being added throughout the game.
  • The game has a big map, with several locations.
  • Plenty of missions to do and side tasks.

Cons:

  • The environment graphics are ugly.
  • The music is quite forgettable. There isn’t a single memorable track.
  • Game not localized in PT-BR, and has audio only in Japanese.
  • Practically zero accessibility options.
  • Little enemy variety.

I thought Fate/Samurai Remnant would be just another Musou, only this time in the Fate universe, but I was wrong: the game doesn’t have those hordes of 1000 enemies on the map for you to decimate on every square meter.

In battles, at most about 15 or 20 of the weaker enemies appear at the same time, and sometimes up to 5 of the stronger enemies, who have more health and a few distinctive moves.

The story has that same old Fate system: a battle between 7 masters with 7 servants, to get an artifact that can grant any wish. Only this time, the item is not the Holy Grail.

Enemy variety is low, it’s almost always the same types of enemies, and even though a few new ones show up near the end, they are still few.

Throughout the story, you pass through several new locations, and each of them brings a series of optional tasks that earn money and extra items if completed.

It took me about 32 hours to finish, playing at a relaxed pace, trying to do all the side missions that showed up before moving on to the main mission, and some of the optional tasks.

After finishing, you can use your save game to start a New Game + with all your equipment, skill points, etc…

It’s a good action RPG, but don’t go in expecting an AAA-level game, one of those very graphics-heavy ones.

Fans of the Fate universe’s stories will be more excited to play the game to the end, to see how the plot unfolds.

Those who like the samurai theme will feel at home, since the game is set in a sort of alternate version of Feudal Japan.

The game having only English subtitles hurts players who don’t master the language.

And having only Japanese voice acting is understandable, given the story’s theme.

All in all, my score for Fate/Samurai Remnant is a good 8.

KOEI Tecmo’s Team Omega took its Samurai Warriors/Sengoku Musou system and modified it quite a lot (from what I remember of the old Musous I played) to create an action RPG that appeals to those who easily got tired of killing thousands of mindless enemy clones on every inch of the map.

Thanks to KOEI Tecmo, which provided a review code so that this review could be carried out.
