Virtua Fighter has another card on the table. SEGA and RGG Studio, the team behind Yakuza and Like a Dragon, released a Virtua Fighter Crossroads trailer on Thursday, October 29, marking the return of Lionel Rafale. In the official description, he is a mysterious young martial artist who has arrived in the city of Vilasapara, skilled enough to outclass even Cielo in a street fight. The question the trailer leaves: why did he come to the city?

For arcade veterans, Lionel is no stranger. The French fighter debuted in Virtua Fighter 3 in 1996 with a Praying Mantis kung fu style full of quick strikes and rhythm changes, and he has stayed on the series roster ever since. Seeing how RGG Studio translates that style into the new format is one of the most interesting points for longtime fans.

And the format really is different. Announced in June, Virtua Fighter Crossroads is a completely new entry in the series: according to SEGA, a rich, cinematic single-player adventure with narrative-driven gameplay, while keeping the versus battles the franchise is known for and the realistic combat that has defined Virtua Fighter since 1993. In June, the game had already introduced the character Bakunawa Killer.

Crossroads is due in 2027, and platforms have not been announced yet. Meanwhile, the latest Virtua Fighter you can play is Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage, available on Steam.
