Atomic Heart showed up again in November 2022, in an exclusive IGN First video: ten minutes of gameplay with a boss fight, showing a bit more of Mundfish’s first-person shooter with RPG elements.
The game is set in an alternate version of the Soviet Union in the 1950s. The setting is Facility 3826, the country’s main scientific research center, in 1955. In this story, scientist Dmitry Sechenov created Polymer in the 1930s, a programmable liquid module that led to huge leaps in cold fusion and robotics and freed much of the population from manual labor. After the war, Sechenov linked the robots to a networked artificial intelligence, the Kollektiv.
The trouble begins with the launch of Kollektiv 2.0. The player controls Major Sergey Nechayev, Agent P-3, who arrives at the facility to help and discovers that the robots have rebelled and killed almost all the staff. Alongside CHAR-les, an artificial intelligence built into his glove, P-3 faces out-of-control robots and failed biomechanical experiments, such as the bosses shown in the video. The look mixes Soviet retrofuturist utopia with a nightmare atmosphere after the collapse.
At the time, Atomic Heart was set for February 21, 2023, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and on Game Pass from launch.
What came next
Atomic Heart came out on February 21, 2023, as promised, and received several awards. The game got story expansions, such as Annihilation Instinct and Trapped in Limbo, the latter set after one of the endings, and, in June 2024, an update brought accessibility options, such as automatic puzzle solving and a colorblind mode.
