In October 2022, Striking Distance Studios’ official account posted a photo of the whole team gathered to celebrate: The Callisto Protocol had gone gold. In practice, development was complete and the final version was ready for manufacturing and distribution.
Days earlier, the studio had denied rumors that the launch would be delayed to 2023 and confirmed the worldwide debut on December 2, with a performance mode at 60 frames per second:
The game is directed by Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space, and was treated from the start as a spiritual successor to that series. Striking Distance was founded in June 2019 inside PUBG Corporation, linked to Krafton, and brought together veterans of Visceral Games and Sledgehammer Games, such as Steve Papoutsis, who ran Dead Space after Schofield left.
In the story, Captain Jacob Lee, played by Josh Duhamel, survives a crash on Callisto, a moon of Jupiter, and ends up imprisoned in a maximum-security penitentiary just as a mysterious disease starts transforming the inmates. The game was coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

What came next
On October 27, the launch in Japan was cancelled: the game did not receive a CERO rating because of its violence, and the studio refused to make cuts. In other countries, The Callisto Protocol came out on December 2, 2022, to mixed reception, and the PC version suffered from shader compilation stutters. Sales came in below Krafton’s expectations. The story DLC Final Transmission came out in June 2023, and in August the studio laid off 32 employees. In 2024, Schofield said the game was released three months earlier than planned at Krafton’s demand, which led to the cutting of four bosses and two enemy types.
