In July 2022, Studio MDHR announced that The Delicious Last Course, the Cuphead DLC, had passed 1 million units sold. The expansion came out on June 30, 2022, so the mark came in under two weeks.
The DLC took a long time to arrive. It was revealed at E3 2018, due in 2019; the studio delayed it to 2020 to avoid overloading and crunching the team, and the COVID-19 pandemic delayed everything once more. The wait brought a new island, new bosses, weapons, charms and a third playable character, Ms. Chalice, who has a double jump, an invincible roll and a parry dash.
Cuphead was released on September 29, 2017 for Xbox One and PC and drew attention for its look inspired by 1930s American cartoons, in the rubber hose style of studios like Disney and Fleischer, and for its high difficulty, boss after boss. The Switch version came out in April 2019 and the PS4 one in July 2020, when the game already totaled 6 million copies. In February 2022, the animated series The Cuphead Show! premiered on Netflix.
Cuphead and the DLC are available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
What came next
In December 2022, Studio MDHR said the DLC had passed 2 million copies. The Delicious Last Course also won three NAVGTR awards, including the ones for animation and score. In June 2026, at Summer Game Fest, the studio announced a new hand-animated Cuphead game and the spin-off Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit style platformer.
