On September 15, 2021, Electronic Arts and DICE announced on social media that Battlefield 2042 had been delayed. The release, set for October 22, moved to November 19, 2021, a delay of almost a month.

In the statement, signed by DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson and the development team, the studio explained that producing the new generation of Battlefield during the pandemic created unexpected challenges. The team had hoped to be back in the offices for the final stretch, but conditions did not allow that safely. With all work being done from home, DICE said it was important to have this extra time to deliver the game it envisioned. The text also promised news about the open beta later that month.

DICE statement on the delay of Battlefield 2042 to November 19, 2021

Battlefield 2042 was announced on June 9, 2021 as the 17th game in the series and with a different approach: multiplayer only, with no single-player campaign. On the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions, matches would have up to 128 players, versus 64 on PS4 and Xbox One. It would also be the first Battlefield with cross-platform play, a subject we had already detailed when EA confirmed cross-save, cross-play and cross-buy on consoles. Another bet was Battlefield Portal, a mode in which the community creates its own rules and which features maps from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3.

What came next

The open beta took place from October 6 to 9, 2021, and the game came out on November 19. Reception was difficult: mixed reviews from the press and a negative reaction from players over technical problems, missing features and gameplay changes. The game fell short of EA’s sales expectations, but kept getting seasons with new specialists. The series returned on October 10, 2025 with Battlefield 6.
