What stands out in this January 2021 story is that it didn’t come from a trailer or a conference, but from a job ad. A listing in Warner Bros. Games’ game production department, posted on the company’s website, gave a clear hint about the publisher’s plans for the following years.
According to the text of the listing, WB Games was “involved in a variety of new projects, ranging from casual games to core games with our well-known franchises across all platforms”, and those projects would have “a big focus on service” (live service, in the original).
For those not used to the term: a game as a service is one that keeps receiving content after launch, with seasons, events, new characters and, in many cases, microtransactions to pay for it all. Destiny and Fortnite are the best-known examples.
At the time, the publisher had four big releases announced: Back 4 Blood, the co-op shooter from Turtle Rock Studios; Gotham Knights, from WB Games Montréal; Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, from Rocksteady; and Hogwarts Legacy, set in the world of Harry Potter. One important detail: the Gotham Knights developers had already said the game was not being made as a service, so the listing did not mean all these titles would follow the model.
What came next
Back 4 Blood launched on October 12, 2021 and Gotham Knights on October 21, 2022, the latter to mixed reviews. Hogwarts Legacy, a single-player game, arrived on February 10, 2023 and became one of the publisher’s biggest hits, with more than 12 million copies in its first two weeks. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the title that most embraced the service model, with seasons and new characters, came out on February 2, 2024, fell short of Warner’s sales expectations and saw Rocksteady end support in January 2025.
