Few games of 2020 became a topic of conversation as quickly as Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. On December 1, 2020, British developer Mediatonic told the press that the game had passed 11 million copies sold on PC alone. The count did not include the PlayStation 4, the game’s other platform at the time.
The pace was impressive. Fall Guys launched on August 4, 2020 for PS4 and PC, published by Devolver Digital. Six days later, Devolver announced 2 million copies sold on Steam. On August 26, there were more than 7 million on Valve’s store. In November, a Unity financial report already mentioned more than 10 million on Steam. In other words, about 1 million more in less than a month.
On the PS4, the path was different: the game was free for PlayStation Plus subscribers in August and became the most downloaded monthly game in the service’s history. After the promotion ended, it went back to being sold normally.
What stands out about the success is how simple and well made the idea is: dozens of costumed little jelly beans compete in elimination obstacle courses, in a kind of game show in battle royale format. You can see the care in the characters’ floppy physics, which turns every tumble into a joke. Streamers helped a lot: during the closed beta weekend, Fall Guys became the most-watched game on Twitch.
Around the same time, Mediatonic said the game’s third season would be shown for the first time at The Game Awards, on December 10.
What came next
Season 3, with a winter theme, debuted on December 15, 2020. In March 2021, Epic Games bought Mediatonic and its parent company, Tonic Games Group. On June 21, 2022, Fall Guys went free-to-play and arrived on Switch, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play across all platforms. On PC, it stopped being sold on Steam and moved to the Epic Games Store.
