A few weeks before the PlayStation 5 launch, at the end of October 2020, Ubisoft published a notice for anyone planning to bring their PS4 library to the new console: some of its games would not work on the PS5 through backward compatibility. The list the company released was this:
- Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy Pack (bundle with the three games above)
- Risk
- Space Junkies
- Werewolves Within
- Star Trek: Bridge Crew
The news drew attention because the impression until then was that the list of incompatible games would be quite short. Sony promised that the PS5 would run more than 99% of the more than 4,000 PS4 games, and on October 9, 2020 it had published on its website a list of just ten PS4 titles that would not work on the new console. The games cited by Ubisoft were not on it, which indicated that the real list was longer and that other games could have problems.
You can see the technical care that PS5 backward compatibility required. According to Sony, it depends on the similarity of the architectures: the PS5’s RDNA 2 GPU has extra logic to maintain compatibility with the PS4’s GPU, and Sony worked with AMD to bring the response time of the Zen 2 CPU closer to that of the PS4’s Jaguar processor. Even so, the company itself warned that some games could show errors.
What came next
In the case of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft announced on November 18, 2024 an update to run the game at 60 frames per second on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
