Bandai Namco has a well-known talent for bringing popular anime to games, from Dragon Ball to One Piece, Naruto and Digimon. In late March 2019, it was the turn of another chapter of Sword Art Online: the company announced Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris, an action RPG for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, based on the Alicization arc of Reki Kawahara’s light novel series.

What stands out is the choice of setting. Instead of yet another side story, the game takes place in the Underworld, the virtual world created by the Alicization Project, with Kirito at the center of the story once again. A nice detail for fans: Lycoris was the first game in the franchise to faithfully follow the original story in its early part, adapting volumes 9 to 14 of the light novels, from Alicization Beginning to Alicization Uniting. After that, the plot moves on to an original arc, centered on the character Medina Orthinanos.
Development was handled by Aquria, the studio that had already made Hollow Fragment and Hollow Realization, two of the series’ most beloved games. For those who liked those two, it was a good sign: the same team was back, now with the story readers had been waiting for most.
What came next
The launch ended up delayed: Alicization Lycoris came out on 9 July 2020 in Japan and on 10 July in the rest of the world, for PS4, Xbox One and PC. A Nintendo Switch version arrived in 2022. Aquria returned to the series with Sword Art Online: Last Recollection, in 2023, and the games franchise kept growing: Sword Art Online console games passed 10 million units sold worldwide by March 2026.
