Numbers first: the Epic Games Store had debuted in December 2018 charging 12% on sales, against the 30% charged by Valve’s Steam, and used exclusives with guaranteed minimum revenue to attract studios. At GDC in March 2019, Epic announced another batch of these exclusives, and the biggest surprise was the Quantic Dream trilogy that until then only existed on PlayStation.

Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human would come to PC published by Quantic Dream itself, with a one-year exclusivity on Epic’s store. In the same presentation, The Outer Worlds, from Obsidian, and Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, both from 2K’s Private Division label, also became store exclusives. The list also included Phoenix Point, The Sinking City, Control, Dauntless and Journey to the Savage Planet, and Ubisoft promised to bring more games there.

Epic took the opportunity to take a jab at Steam. According to the company, the store already had about 85 million users, and Metro Exodus, one of the most controversial exclusives, sold in its launch period about two and a half times what the previous game in the series sold in the same period on Steam. In practice, this means Epic wanted to prove that exclusivity paid off.

What came next

Heavy Rain reached PC on 24 June 2019, Beyond: Two Souls on 22 July 2019 and Detroit: Become Human in December 2019. The third one’s numbers are impressive: with a development budget of 30 million euros, Detroit became the biggest launch and best-selling game in the French studio’s history, with 15 million units by January 2026. Translating the jargon: Sony’s bet on the PlayStation 4 ended up paying off outside it too.
