Good news for those enjoying the weekend: Bungie extended the open beta of Destiny 2 on PS4 and Xbox One. Due to end on Sunday, July 23, 2017, the test stayed up until Tuesday the 25th, closing at 6 PM Pacific time. According to Bungie support, the extension would serve for “additional service testing,” that is, more load on the servers before launch.
The beta had started with early access for those who pre-ordered, and on Xbox One it was opened on the 19th to that audience and widened on the 21st to all Xbox Live Gold subscribers.
What stands out is how well Bungie chose the slice of the game to show. The beta had the campaign’s first mission, Homecoming, in which the Guardians defend the Tower from the Cabal attack; the strike The Inverted Spire, against the Vex on the planetoid Nessus; and two Crucible modes, Control, on the Endless Vale map, and the new Countdown, a round-based mode in which one team plants bombs at the other’s base and the roles reverse each round. You could also test three new subclasses: Dawnblade, for the Warlock; Arcstrider, for the Hunter; and Sentinel, for the Titan.
Some players complained that weapons and abilities felt weak in PvE. Bungie replied that the beta build was old and that adjustments were already being made.
In the same period a new video of the game came out, from the IGN First series, showing Nessus activities such as Lost Sectors, public events and Adventures:
What came next
Destiny 2 arrived on PS4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017. The PC had its own beta in late August and received the full game on October 24, 2017, via Battle.net. In October 2019, with the Shadowkeep expansion, the game moved to Steam and became free to play. The saga of the Light and the Darkness ended in 2024 with The Final Shape.
