A lovely detail for anyone who grew up with the 16-bit Final Fantasy games: Final Fantasy Resonance, the series’ first HD-2D game, the style that blends pixel art with 3D environments and lighting effects, launches this Thursday, October 22, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.

Where it comes from

Announced at the June 9 Nintendo Direct, the game is published by Square Enix and developed with Lancarse. Its story starts from the first arc of the mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but it has been rebuilt and expanded for consoles, with new visuals and the structure of a full RPG. It is a tale of Crystals, with companions bound by fate against a force that threatens to bring everything to ruin.

What to expect

Combat is turn-based again, with a strategic system Square Enix describes as having a modern twist. The standout is Visions: echoes of familiar series characters who join battles with their own abilities, and the names that appear include Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light. Chocobos, espers and airships are back too, and you can see the care in bringing those icons into the new look.

Price, editions and bonuses

The standard edition costs $49.99. There is also a Digital Deluxe Edition with extra items, and anyone who buys by November 6 gets the Squire Kickstart Pack, with items for the start of the adventure. A free demo is available on Steam.

Supported languages on Steam include English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Indies and pixel art

Capitão Pixel swears he has a pilot’s license, but the only thing he really flies is the Steam Next Fest demo list. He covers indies, pixel art and art direction, and can write three paragraphs about a jump animation. He has never been seen without his captain’s cap, not even in photos (which, let’s be honest, are all drawn).
