Not-E3 week: several events confirmed to fill that void in our hearts.
Those who lived through the E3 era after video game magazines know exactly what I’m talking about.
Here are the dates of the events confirmed so far, already in Brasília time to make your life easier:
- June 2 (Tuesday 6:00 p.m.) – PlayStation State of Play (extended Wolverine trailer at the start and 60+ minutes of trailers)
- June 5 (Friday 6:00 p.m.) – Summer Game Fest (could have several surprises)
- June 6 (Saturday 1:00 p.m.) – Wholesome Direct (various indies published by Wholesome Games)
- June 6 (Saturday 4:00 p.m.) – Future Games Show (world premieres of multiplatform games)
- June 7 (Sunday 2:00 p.m.) – Xbox Games Showcase + Gears of War E-Day Direct (could have several surprises, including for the PS5)
- June 7 (Sunday 4:00 p.m.) – PC Gaming Show
There must be some other event out there that I forgot to list, but that’s part of it.
I won’t post the broadcast links here, but you can look for them on the official YouTube, Twitch, Discord channels, etc… they’ll be there.
And if you want to watch with some annoying YouTuber talking over the original broadcast, feel free to do that too.
Also, some insiders said Nintendo will hold a Direct in June, but didn’t want to guess a date this time.
I’ll also try to become an insider by saying obvious things:
“I heard from a reliable source that it will rain at some point between now and the end of the year, and the rain will be wet water.”
A little story for those who are still new:
Every year, in some week of June, that date was the most anticipated for anyone following video game news. More than the Football World Cup, or any other.
When E3 week arrived, it was chaos, shouting and fireworks, because the big publishers, the ones with money to spend, held their pre-conferences and streamed live on the internet to show their news planned for the rest of the year and also the following year.
Obviously, the console makers’ conferences were the most anticipated.
Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would rent a theater in Los Angeles, usually near where E3 was held, decorate it in their colors and put together their portfolio of trailers, guests and announcements, hoping to get more attention than their competitors.
We were flooded with trailers, news, articles, confirmations and reveals, so much that it was even hard to keep up with everything.
And who doesn’t remember the legendary E3 of 2015: it had the announcement of the Final Fantasy 7 remake and Shenmue 3, games we imagined would never be made. And it had the confirmation of The Last Guardian, which was announced for PS3 and most had already given the project up as canceled.
And there was also the reveal of Horizon Zero Dawn, which would become one of Sony’s big franchises today.
E3 2016 will also be remembered forever: Sony’s conference started with a game unknown until then, with a live orchestra on stage playing the music, to then reveal a bearded Kratos, with a son, in Norse mythology. And in that same conference, there was also the reveal of Days Gone with its zombie hordes, and it ended with the announcement of Spider-Man.
