Some updates arrive with a list of fixes, and some arrive with an entire realm. Grindstone and Games Farm showed this Wednesday, May 7, what awaits players in Svartalfheim, the new world of Jötunnslayer: Hordes of Hel, which enters the game with the 0.4 early access update on Steam, set for May 13.
A realm of stone, mines and forges
What stands out is the setting. In Norse mythology, Svartalfheim is the land of the Svartalfar, and the game takes that idea to halls carved into rock, mine shafts and endless foundries of these hardworking dwarves. For those who like art direction, it’s a welcome palette change: out go the snow, in come the metal and the glow of the forges.
Warden, the new hero
The most anticipated novelty is the Warden class: a sturdy dwarf with unshakable determination and a huge appetite for combat, food and gold. A nice detail: the official description gives him more personality than many RPG classes usually get.
The update also promises new enemies, new gods and new mechanics, and a brand-new monster waiting in the final act.
About the game
Jötunnslayer: Hordes of Hel is a survival roguelike against hordes set in Norse mythology. The player faces waves of enemies to earn blessings from Viking gods, explores hostile worlds and takes on powerful bosses.
Games Farm is an independent studio of more than 50 people in Košice, Slovakia, with more than 20 released titles, among them the Heretic Kingdoms franchise. Grindstone, also Slovak, was founded in 2017 to help developers launch creative and commercially viable games.
What came next
The Svartalfheim Descent update arrived on May 13, 2025, as promised. It brought the smith god duo Brokk and Sindri and the boss Construct Jötunn, and came with the announcement of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. The Steam page lists the full release on September 3, 2025, with a Brazilian Portuguese interface.
