What a delicious combination: Ice Code Games, the studio behind Hard West 2 and Rogue Waters, announced Nightmare Frontier, a tactical extraction strategy game with roguelite elements. The setting is an alternate version of 19th-century America, turned inside out by a mysterious event that blurred the line between reality and horror.
Survivors face the Dreadweavers, creatures that embody people’s deepest fears. You command a group of scavengers combing through a devastated town for resources, and every extra step increases the risk.
Turns, shots and the temptation of “just one more item”
Combat is turn-based, with firearms and melee, using improved mechanics from the studio’s previous games. CEO Mateusz Pilski highlights the “push your luck” element: the urge to go after one more valuable item can end in devastating losses. Completing the package are a “Nightmare” that affects every system in the game and exploration missions through the haunted town.
Release is set for the (northern hemisphere) summer, with a demo planned for Steam. The studio took the game to PAX Boston, from May 8 to 11, at the Games From Poland booth (number 15078).
Our take
What excites me here is the marriage between the tactics of Hard West 2 and extraction tension: deciding when to leave usually makes for the best stories. If the “Nightmare” really affects everything, each run could become a new puzzle.
