Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 reached the mark of 50 million units sold in early December.
Even with a relatively weak year, in which Sony released few first-party games, the PlayStation 5 managed to reach the mark of 50 million units sold to consumers, 161 weeks after its launch date.
For comparison, the PS4, which had neither stock problems nor 2 years of pandemic, reached the same mark of 50 million in 160 weeks, just 1 week less.
Sony also reported that November 2023 was the best month in PlayStation history, in both revenue and units sold.
PlayStation sales were boosted by big games released between October and November, such as Spider-Man 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, FC24 and the debut of Roblox on PlayStation.

According to an estimate by Ampere Analysis, PS5 sales grew 65% and it sold 22.5 million units in 2023.
On the Nintendo Switch, sales fell 18%, reaching 16.4 million consoles sold. The Switch is heading into its 7th year on the market and Nintendo is expected to announce its successor in early 2024.
Xbox sales, meanwhile, fell 15% and Microsoft’s consoles sold 7.6 million units in 2023. But hardware does not seem to be Microsoft’s focus at the moment.
