On November 2, 2022, Naughty Dog and HBO confirmed the premiere date for the series based on the acclaimed game The Last of Us: January 15, 2023, on HBO and HBO Max. The announcement came with a new poster and the line “You have no idea what loss is”.

The first teaser trailer had been released in September and became the most-watched promotional video in HBO’s history up to that point.

The first season adapts the 2013 game and the Left Behind expansion in nine episodes, with Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann created the series, and the guest cast includes Anna Torv as Tess, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as Bill and Frank, and Storm Reid as Riley. The score is by Gustavo Santaolalla, the games’ composer, alongside David Fleming.

It was a huge production: the biggest ever filmed in Alberta, Canada, with a first-season budget above 100 million Canadian dollars, more than 10 million per episode, which placed it among the most expensive series on television.

What came next

The premiere happened as promised. Less than two weeks later, on January 27, 2023, HBO renewed the series for a second season. The premiere episode drew almost 40 million viewers in two months, across TV and streaming, and the first season received 24 Emmy nominations, with eight wins at the Creative Arts Emmys. The second season premiered on April 13, 2025, and the third is expected in 2027.
