Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, the new game from Team Ninja, got a release date in October 2022: March 3, 2023. As previously announced, the game would come out for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and would also be on Game Pass for PC and consoles from day one.

The project was first mentioned in October 2021, in a broadcast celebrating the 40-year career of Kou Shibusawa, president of Koei Tecmo, as an action game based on the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, by Luo Guanzhong. The official reveal came on June 12, 2022, at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase.

The story takes place in a fictional version of the fall of the Han dynasty, just before the Three Kingdoms period. In 184, the Yellow Turban Rebellion breaks out, and the protagonist, a nameless militia soldier created by the player, faces historical figures and creatures from Chinese mythology corrupted by demonic qi. As in Nioh, the foundation is historical, but full of supernatural elements.

Combat follows the studio’s demanding school, focused on deflecting enemy attacks with the weapon to open room for a counterattack. Each enemy has a Morale level, which indicates how hard the fight will be, and the player can count on one of the five Divine Beasts, such as Qilin and Qinglong, to help in the fight. Direction is by Fumihiko Yasuda, president of Team Ninja and director of Nioh and Nioh 2, with production by Masaaki Yamagiwa, known for Tokyo Jungle and Bloodborne.

What came next

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty came out on March 3, 2023, received generally favorable reviews, with praise for its combat system, and passed one million units sold in April 2023. In September 2026, it got a Nintendo Switch 2 version, and the sequel, Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, was announced for March 2027.
