In October 2022, less than two weeks before launch, Warner Bros. Games published the official launch trailer for Gotham Knights, with gameplay footage.

Gotham Knights was set for October 21, 2022, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The PS4 and Xbox One versions had been cancelled months earlier.

The starting point is the death of Batman and Commissioner Gordon. With crime and police corruption on the rise, four of the Dark Knight’s protégés, Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood, take over protecting Gotham from the Belfry, the backup base left by Bruce Wayne. The investigation leads to the Court of Owls, a secret society that wants to dominate the city with its assassins, the Talons, and to the League of Shadows, led by Talia al Ghul. Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze and Clayface also appear.

Each hero has their own combat and traversal style, and the campaign can be played solo or in two-player online co-op, with drop-in and drop-out at any time. A comic miniseries, Batman: Gotham Knights – Gilded City, came out as a prelude from October 25, telling Batman’s last case.

What came next

Gotham Knights got a mixed reception: praise for the co-op and the protagonists, criticism of repetitive missions, combat and the focus on gear. On consoles, the game ran locked at 30 frames per second. Even so, it debuted in second place in the week’s sales in the UK and ended 2022 as the 17th best-selling game in the United States. In November, it got the Heroic Assault mode, four-player co-op.
