On September 26, 2022, HBO released the first teaser trailer for the series based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. The message that accompanied the video summed up the tone: “Save who you can save”. The premiere was promised for 2023, on HBO and HBO Max.
The YouTube video we published at the time was taken down, so we left above the official post from the series’ account, with the teaser.
The series was created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who wrote and co-directed the games. Pedro Pascal plays Joel and Bella Ramsey plays Ellie, and the first season adapts, in nine episodes, the 2013 game (which had just received the remake The Last of Us Part I) and the Left Behind expansion. Filming took place in Alberta, Canada, between July 2021 and June 2022, and the score features Gustavo Santaolalla, the games’ composer, alongside David Fleming.
The impact was immediate: the teaser passed 17 million views in less than 24 hours and 57 million in 72 hours, the most-watched promotional video in HBO’s history up to that point. The first scenes had already appeared in August, in an HBO Max trailer shown at the premiere of House of the Dragon.
What came next
The premiere date, January 15, 2023, was confirmed in November, and the full trailer was released at CCXP in December. The series became HBO’s most-watched debut season, averaging almost 32 million viewers per episode, and the first season won eight Creative Arts Emmy awards. The second season, based on the first half of The Last of Us Part II, premiered on April 13, 2025, and the third is expected in 2027.
