At the September 13, 2022 Nintendo Direct, Square Enix announced Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, a new rhythm game in the Theatrhythm series, prepared as part of the celebrations for Final Fantasy’s 35th anniversary.

Watch the trailer below:

The base version came with 385 songs from more than 40 games in the franchise, including the main series, spin-offs and mobile titles, and more than 100 selectable characters, drawn in chibi style by Monster Octopus, a veteran artist of the series.

The gameplay keeps the foundation of its predecessors: pressing the right input at the right time when triggers cross the screen. There are three types of stage, battle, field and event, and there is a light RPG element: you build a team of up to four characters, each with a level, stats and abilities. Since Switch and PS4 do not have the 3DS stylus, touch controls gave way to new patterns, such as pressing two buttons at once. Multi Battle mode allows online matches with up to four players per room.

The announcement also promised songs from other Square Enix series via DLC, such as Nier, Octopath Traveler and Chrono. Theatrhythm Final Bar Line was set for February 16, 2023, on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

What came next

The demo came out on February 1, 2023, with 30 songs and 30 characters, and the game arrived on the planned date, with 104 characters. Adding the exclusive tracks from the Deluxe editions and the DLC, the library reached 505 songs, including songs from SaGa, Live A Live, Mana, The World Ends with You, Xenogears and even Final Fantasy XVI. Critics liked it, praising the repertoire and the balance between accessibility and challenge, with reservations about the RPG elements and the loss of touch controls. As the name suggests, the developers treated the game as the closing of the Theatrhythm series.
