Octopath Traveler II was announced at the September 13, 2022 Nintendo Direct. Square Enix confirmed the launch for February 24, 2023, on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC, via Steam. Watch the announcement trailer:
The game, made by Square Enix with Acquire, is the sequel to 2018’s Octopath Traveler, but with new characters and a new world, Solistia. The setting is technologically more advanced than the first game’s medieval one, recalling the 18th and 19th centuries, with the emergence of innovations such as the steam engine.
The structure follows the same idea: eight travelers, each with their own story. At the start, the player picks one of them as the protagonist, who cannot leave the party until finishing their journey, and meets the other seven in whatever order they like, with up to four characters in the party at once. Combat is turn-based, in the classic Japanese RPG style, and each character has “Path Actions”, unique abilities to interact with townspeople, such as obtaining information, getting items or recruiting helpers.
One of the novelties is the day and night system: the player can change the time at any moment, which changes the enemies that appear, where characters are and which Path Actions can be used. The visuals remain in the HD-2D style, which recreates 16-bit era pixel art in 3D scenery that looks like dioramas. At the time of the announcement, the game was estimated to be about 90% complete, and the first live demonstration was shown days later at Tokyo Game Show.
