Bayonetta 3 appeared at the September 13, 2022 Nintendo Direct with a new trailer.

Right after, Nintendo published on YouTube a nearly 8-minute video called Ways of the Witch, focused on combat mechanics.

Developed by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo as a Switch exclusive, the game is directed by Yusuke Miyata and supervised by Hideki Kamiya, creator of the series. It was announced at The Game Awards 2017 and spent years in silence while PlatinumGames released other projects, such as Astral Chain, until the first full demonstration at a September 2021 Nintendo Direct.

The main novelty is Demon Slave, which lets Bayonetta summon giant demons and fight alongside them, added to the classic Witch Time, the slow motion triggered when she dodges at the last instant. The story involves the multiverse: Bayonetta faces the Homunculi, man-made biological weapons led by the entity Singularity, with the help of alternate versions of herself and Viola, a witch in training who is also playable, as is Jeanne.

Bayonetta 3 was set for October 28, 2022, on Nintendo Switch.

What came next

The game came out on the date and received generally favorable reviews, with praise for its gameplay, presentation and extra content, and criticism of the story, camera and performance. It sold 1.07 million units by March 2023. On the eve of launch, the protagonist’s voice change made news: Hellena Taylor, the original voice actress, was replaced by Jennifer Hale after a payment dispute. In 2023, the series got the prelude Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, developed in parallel.
