After images leaked on the morning of September 1, 2022, Ubisoft rushed to confirm it: the series’ next game would be called Assassin’s Creed Mirage. In Brazil, the company’s official account announced that Mirage “is the next game in the saga” and that more details would be shown at Ubisoft Forward, an event set for September 10.
Along with the announcement, Ubisoft released a piece of concept art that, like the leak, indicated the game would be set in the Middle East:

The art shows a hooded assassin leaping over a crowd, with domes and a minaret in the background. Ubisoft Forward confirmed what the image suggested: Mirage is set in 9th-century Baghdad, during the Islamic Golden Age, and follows Basim Ibn Ishaq, a street thief who joins the Hidden Ones and starts fighting the Order of the Ancients.
Mirage began as an expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and ended up becoming a standalone game. It is the first game made primarily by Ubisoft Bordeaux, which was previously a support studio, and the aim was to return to the series’ roots, which debuted in the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation: more stealth, parkour and assassinations and fewer RPG elements, in a world much smaller than in recent games. Baghdad is divided into four districts, with a size closer to Unity’s Paris and Revelations’ Constantinople.
What came next
Assassin’s Creed Mirage was released on October 5, 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and came to iPhone and iPad in June 2024. Critics praised the world, the focus on stealth and the return to basics, with reservations about the characters and story. Its successor, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in Japan, came out in March 2025.
