The Epic Games Store started September 2022 with two free games and a DLC pack. As has happened every Thursday for a few years, the items could be claimed for a week: this round started on September 1 and ran until September 8. The games for the first Thursday of September were:
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

- Submerged: Hidden Depths

- Knockout City: Armazillo pack

The highlight was Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the most recent mainline game in the series at that time. Released in September 2018 and developed by Eidos-Montréal, it closes Lara Croft’s origin trilogy begun in the 2013 reboot: Lara crosses the tropical regions of the Americas toward the legendary city of Paititi, trying to prevent a Mayan apocalypse that she herself set off. The Definitive Edition brings together the base game and the extra content from the season pass.
Submerged: Hidden Depths, by Uppercut Games, is the sequel to 2015’s Submerged: an exploration game, with no combat, in a flooded post-apocalyptic world, which falls into the so-called ecogames, about the effects of climate change. It came out first on Stadia, in December 2020, and reached other systems in March 2022.
Finally, the Armazillo pack for Knockout City, Velan Studios’ multiplayer dodgeball game, included the Kaiju Terror outfit, mask, gloves, defeat pose, player icon and team logo. The game had gone free-to-play on June 1, 2022.
What came next
Knockout City had a short life: the public servers were shut down on June 6, 2023, leaving only a PC version for private servers. The Tomb Raider series also changed hands, as Square Enix sold the rights to Embracer Group in May 2022, and Shadow remained the last Tomb Raider published by Square Enix. The next main game, Tomb Raider Catalyst, will be published by Amazon Games, with release planned for 2028 after being delayed from 2027.
