On August 22, 2022, The Game Awards organization announced the date for that year’s edition: December 8, 2022, live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, to celebrate the best games of 2022 and show what was ahead. More details about the schedule and tickets were left for the second half of the year.

The format followed the usual: the annual awards show, with nominated games across several categories, and the long-awaited World Premieres, new announcements that creator and host Geoff Keighley usually gathers thanks to his contacts with studios and publishers.

At that moment, the big favorite for the top award was Elden Ring, from FromSoftware, which had dominated conversations since its February launch and was also tipped to take Game of the Year at other specialized press awards. Two years earlier, the 2020 edition had crowned The Last of Us Part II.

What came next

The forecast held. Elden Ring took Game of the Year, Best Direction and Best RPG, while God of War Ragnarök led the night with eleven nominations and six awards, including Best Narrative, Best Action/Adventure Game, Best Performance, for Christopher Judge, and Best Score and Music, for Bear McCreary. The ceremony debuted the Best Adaptation category and had announcements such as Death Stranding 2, Hades II and Crash Team Rumble.

The edition set an audience record, with more than 103 million streams. The most talked-about moment, though, was not an announcement: an intruder walked on stage with the FromSoftware team and gave a short, nonsensical speech until security removed him.
