With no warning or fanfare, PlayStation’s official social media accounts posted on August 22, 2022 a simple post, with two photos of Sony’s new virtual reality headset and a short sentence: PlayStation VR2 would arrive in early 2023. The same message appeared on several of the brand’s official accounts around the world, including the Brazilian one:
PlayStation VR2 had been announced in January 2022, at CES, as the successor to the original PS VR, now built for the PlayStation 5. Until then, Sony had given neither a date nor a price, and the launch window was the main information missing.
The specs were already quite different from the first generation. The PS VR2 has two OLED screens, each with a resolution of 2,000 x 2,040 pixels, with HDR support and 90 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates. The field of view reaches about 110 degrees. The first model relied on an external PlayStation Camera to track movement; the PS VR2 uses four cameras on the front of the headset itself, which also track the new Sense controllers, and two internal cameras for eye tracking. The connection to the PS5 is made through a single USB-C cable. The headset also has an internal motor for vibration and is lighter than the previous one.
According to Sony, development took about six years and was done in parallel with the PlayStation 5.
What came next
On November 2, 2022, Sony announced the date and the price in the United States: February 22, 2023, for 549.99 dollars. The headset hit stores that day. In August 2024, the company released an adapter to use the PS VR2 on PC, which received mixed reviews for leaving out features such as eye tracking and HDR.
