On August 19, 2022, right on the eve of the game’s second reveal anniversary, Black Myth: Wukong appeared again with two new videos.
The first, published by the NVIDIA GeForce channel, has a little over eight minutes of gameplay. According to the description, it was the first time the game appeared in 4K, with ray tracing and NVIDIA’s DLSS technology. The video takes the player back to a mysterious forest and shows fights against new enemies, collectibles, hidden elements, the main menu with the gathered items and a bestiary that records the enemies encountered and defeated during the journey:
The second video came from the official channels of the game and of the studio Game Science: a six-minute scene, made with the game engine, in which all the characters appear for the first time:
Wukong is an action RPG inspired by Journey to the West, the Chinese literary classic about the Monkey King. The player controls the Destined One, a monkey who fights with a staff and sets out in search of six relics tied to Sun Wukong’s six senses. The game had already drawn attention a year earlier, when it got a nearly 13-minute Unreal Engine 5 trailer. Even so, in August 2022, it still had no release forecast and no confirmed platforms.
What came next
The wait lasted two more years. In January 2023, a Year of the Rabbit short film revealed that the launch would be in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2024, and at The Game Awards in December 2023 the studio confirmed the date: August 20, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC. The Xbox Series X|S version arrived a year later, on August 20, 2025. The game received favorable reviews, won Game of the Year awards and, according to the studio, sold more than 10 million units in four days, one of the fastest launches in history.
