On May 5, 2022, Microsoft announced a partnership with Epic Games to bring Fortnite to Xbox Cloud Gaming at no charge. No Game Pass subscription was needed: a Microsoft account was enough.

The game could be streamed on iOS or Android phones and tablets, on iPads and on Windows PCs, through the browser at xbox.com/play, using native touch controls or a compatible controller. The release applied to the 26 countries where the service worked, and Brazil was among them: Xbox Cloud Gaming had arrived here in September 2021.

The announcement carried extra weight for iPhone and iPad players. Fortnite had been off the App Store since August 2020, when Epic enabled its own payment system in the game to avoid Apple’s fee; Apple blocked the game and Epic went to court. Through the cloud, straight in the browser, the battle royale could run on those devices again without going through the store.

For Microsoft, putting a free-to-play game in the cloud catalog was treated as an important step, and the company said it wanted to bring other free titles in the future. The full announcement is on Xbox Wire.

What came next

Xbox Cloud Gaming kept growing and, in June 2022, also reached Argentina and New Zealand. The Epic and Apple dispute only had a practical outcome in May 2025, when Apple approved Fortnite’s return to the US App Store. Fortnite, for its part, remains active, with new seasons and modes such as Reload, OG and LEGO Fortnite.
