Sony buys Bungie, creator of the Destiny franchise

Sony buys Bungie, creator of Destiny and the early Halo games, for US$3.6 billion. See what changes for the studio and its games.

Sony announces the purchase of Bungie, creator of the Destiny franchise and developer of the first Halo games, for $3.6 billion.

According to the official statement, Bungie will remain independent and multiplatform, even as it becomes part of PlayStation Studios.

Bungie’s knowledge and technology in multiplatform games and games as a service will help expand the PlayStation brand to other players.

No changes will be made to Destiny 2; the game will remain on current platforms and come to new ones as well.

Bungie became its own publisher after securing independence from Activision Blizzard, and that will continue even after the acquisition.

With this acquisition, Bungie gets a boost to take Destiny to other types of entertainment, such as TV series or films.

And Sony gets a studio with experience creating massive, multiplatform games with content that seems never to end.

Jim Ryan also says he is on the way to expanding the PlayStation community beyond consoles, and creating online games as a service across different platforms is one way to speed up that process.

And he emphasizes that this acquisition is the result of months of conversations and planning, and is not a response to Microsoft’s recent gigantic acquisition. And he says more acquisitions will be made.
