On January 31, 2022, Sony announced the year’s first State of Play, and it would have a single subject: Gran Turismo 7. The broadcast was set for Wednesday, February 2, at 7 p.m. Brasília time, on PlayStation’s YouTube channel.
According to the PlayStation Blog, there would be more than 30 minutes of new footage and gameplay details, focusing on the game’s modes and features on the PlayStation 5 version.
Gran Turismo 7 is the eighth main game and 13th overall in Polyphony Digital’s series, and came after Gran Turismo Sport, from 2017. It was revealed on June 11, 2020, at the PS5 reveal event, and was planned for 2021, but was delayed to 2022 because of the pandemic’s effects on development. The set date was March 4, 2022, with versions for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
A whole broadcast for a single game shows the weight of the series for Sony. Gran Turismo has existed since 1997, always on PlayStation consoles, and is the brand’s best-selling franchise. The premise remains the same: racing simulation with a large selection of licensed real cars, driving based on real-world physics and tracks that reproduce real circuits.
What came next
Gran Turismo 7 came out on March 4, 2022 and got generally positive reviews, with praise for its visuals and gameplay. Player reception was harsher, with complaints about microtransactions and the need to repeat races to collect credits, and the game suffered heavy review bombing on Metacritic. Polyphony kept updating it: version 1.29, from February 2023, added PlayStation VR2 support and events featuring the Sophy AI. By September 2025, the Gran Turismo series had passed 100 million units sold.
