On December 19, 2021, Nexon published a new DNF Duel trailer and gave the first concrete estimate: the fighting game would arrive in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2022. For us in Brazil, that meant some time between June and September, in the middle of winter.
The video gathered moves from the characters announced so far and showed, in passing, the Ghostblade class fighter. The confirmed platforms were PS4, PS5 and PC; there was no exact date yet.
DNF Duel was born from Dungeon Fighter Online, Neople’s multiplayer beat ‘em up that was a huge hit in South Korea and China. Nexon’s idea was to take the brand to a global audience through a fighting game, and for that it called on people who know the subject: Arc System Works, of Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, with Eighting and Neople itself on development. The game had been revealed in December 2020, and in the same week as the trailer a beta was held, from December 17 to 20, with ten playable characters.
What sparked the most curiosity was the MP bar. Instead of relying only on special meters, each fighter spends MP to unleash “skills”, as in the series’ RPGs, and this bar regenerates over time. The simplified commands also aimed to attract those who had never tackled a fighting game. With ASW in charge, the expectation was for polished animation and a carefully thought-out system.
What came next
After a second beta, in April 2022, DNF Duel was released on June 28, 2022 for PS4, PS5 and PC, with 15 playable characters and an unlockable boss. Critics received it well: Metacritic recorded generally favorable reviews, with praise for the stable rollback netcode, the visuals and the variety of the cast, and reservations about the weak story mode and the learning curve. A season pass with five characters arrived in December 2022, and the Nintendo Switch version came out on April 20, 2023.
