Almost two years after launch, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot got a free demo. In December 2021, Bandai Namco released the demo on the main digital stores: PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop and Steam. In Brazil, the company’s official profile summed up the invitation like this: “If you haven’t tried DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT yet, this is your chance!”

The demo gave access to one story mission and a few side quests, and also let you explore the map and fight regular enemies. Of course, not all modes and options were available. It was also not possible to save, so no progress could be carried over to the full game.

For those who don’t know: Kakarot is an action RPG with fighting elements, developed by CyberConnect2, the studio behind the Naruto Ultimate Ninja series, and published by Bandai Namco. The game retells the story of Dragon Ball Z, divided into the Saiyan, Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu sagas, with original moments from the anime. Between battles, you can fish, collect Z orbs, eat, drive a hover car and train. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Future Trunks, Gotenks and Vegito are the playable characters in the main campaign.

The game came out on January 17, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and the Nintendo Switch version arrived on September 24, 2021, already with the A New Power Awakens DLC, inspired by Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

What came next

Kakarot kept growing: it got a PlayStation 5 version on January 13, 2023 and an Xbox Series X|S version on February 3, 2023, plus new paid stories with parts of Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Daima and the original Dragon Ball. The game passed 8 million copies in July 2024 and reached 10 million in January 2026.
