On September 2, 2021, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog its next PlayStation Showcase, set for Thursday, September 9, at 5 p.m. Brasília time. The promise was a look at PS5 games planned for the end of that year and beyond, with news from PlayStation Studios and other major studios in the industry.
The broadcast would run about 40 minutes, with more details released soon after by the participating teams themselves. Sony also made clear what would be left out: nothing about the next generation of PlayStation VR, since the focus would be only on PlayStation 5 games. The event would air on PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch.
The PS5 had hit stores in November 2020, less than a year earlier, and expectations were high for news about sequels to Sony’s studio games.
What came next
The Showcase kept its promise. It opened with the confirmation of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake for PS5, then in the hands of Aspyr, which later handed the project over to Saber Interactive. Project Eve, from South Korea’s Shift Up, also appeared, announced as a PS5 exclusive published by Sony; the game came out in April 2024 under the name Stellar Blade.
The most anticipated moment was the first look at God of War Ragnarök, with Eric Williams confirmed as director and Richard Schiff as the voice of Odin. The game came out on November 9, 2022, for PS4 and PS5. Insomniac Games surprised twice: it announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, released on October 20, 2023, and Marvel’s Wolverine, which only arrived on September 15, 2026.
Not everything was a party. The trailer for the new PS5 version of GTA V, released that month, became one of the most-disliked videos on the PlayStation channel, with fans complaining about yet another re-release of the game. Calmly put, that September 9 shaped a good part of the PS5’s future.
